Environmental Sanitation: The Key to Healthy Living in the City Center

A clean and healthy living environment provides comfort and protects us from various health threats. Environmental sanitation is one of the main factors influencing the quality of life, especially in high population density and city activity.

Why is Environmental Sanitation Important?

Who doesn't like living in a clean environment where the air is fresh and the views are soothing to the eyes? This quality depends on environmental sanitation. Environmental sanitation includes the management of wastewater, garbage, and clean water treatment to maintain cleanliness and public health. A well-functioning sanitation system that works well can reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. Apart from that, good sanitation also supports environmental sustainability, reduces pollution, and maintains ecosystem balance.

Types of Sanitation Systems in Urban Areas

The layout shape of residential areas and the habits of urban communities require appropriate sanitation systems. Some commonly used types of sanitation systems that are commonly used include:

  • Centralized Wastewater Disposal System: In big cities like Jakarta, this system is used to channel domestic and industrial wastewater to waste treatment plants, such as the one at the Setiabudi Waste Water Treatment Plant (IPAL) in, South Jakarta. With this system, wastewater is treated first before being discharged into rivers or the sea, reducing water pollution and minimizing negative impacts on the environment.
  • Individual Septic Systems: In many parts of Indonesia, including large cities such as Surabaya and Medan, homes that are not connected to a centralized wastewater disposal system use septic tanks. TheseThis tanks requires regular maintenance to prevent pollution of so that it does not pollute groundwater or nearby clean water sources in the vicinity.
  • Green Sanitation: In Bandung, several communities are starting to adopt environmentally friendly technologies, y such as biofilters to treat wastewater naturally. Another example is the use of eco-san toilets in several areas with limited minimal access to clean water to recycle wastewater into organic fertilizer without damaging the environment and water sources.

Impact of a Clean Environment on Health

A clean environment not only improves the aesthetics of the city but also has a direct impact on physical and mental health. Pollution-free air and clean water help prevent various diseases such as respiratory infections, allergies, and skin diseases. Not only physical health, a clean environment also has a big impact on mental health. Public spaces that are free of from rubbish and with fresh air provide a sense of comfort and reduce stress. Research shows that people living who live in clean environments tend to have better moods and lower levels of anxiety.

What Can We Do to Improve Environmental Sanitation?

Every individual has an important role in maintaining environmental cleanliness and public health. Simple steps we can take include:

  • Ensure that all types of rubbish and household waste are disposed of properly.  Sorting waste and disposing of it in appropriate places will make waste management easier.
  • Support recycling programs. We can contribute by starting from home, separating inorganic waste (plastic, paper, metal) to be recycled into new products.
  • Conserve water to reduce excessive waste and support more efficient water management. For example, limit shower time, turn off taps when not in use, and use washing machines or dishwashers only when full to reduce water wastage.

By contributing to environmental sanitation through these efforts steps, we not only create cleaner and more comfortable living but also help maintain the health of society as a whole. This collective effort will improve the quality of life, prevent various diseases caused by unclean environments, and help preserve natural resources for future generations.
