3 Simple and Fast Ways to Make Compost

You may be wondering how to make simple and fast compost? Compost is a type of fertilizer made from recycled waste such as organic waste or food waste.

Compost is organic material that has undergone a weathering process because of the interaction between spoilage bacteria or microorganisms that work on the organic material.

Generally, only plant material can be composted, as milk, bones and meat can harbor harmful bacteria and should not be composted. When disposed of, organic waste will produce methane gas which has the potential to become a greenhouse gas.

You can overcome this by processing it into organic fertilizer. By making organic fertilizer, it can reduce about 25-50% of organic waste so that production methane gas is reduced.

How to Make Simple and Fast Compost

There are several simple and quick ways to make compost that you can follow at home. This activity certainly deserves an example for the community so that organic waste is not left to rot.

1. How to Make Simple and Fast Compost from Organic Waste

Here are some materials, tools and ways to make simple and fast compost from organic waste that can be followed:

Ingredients for composting:

Activator is a substance to accelerate the performance of decomposing organisms so that the decomposition of organic matter and the decay process runs faster. There are several types of activators on the market, one example of which is often used is EM4.

Composting tools:

  • A chopping or cutting tool such as a knife.
  • Garbage shelters, can use paint buckets or other used containers.
  • A container or bucket to dissolve the activator.
  • Gloves and stirrer.

How to make compost:

  • Cut organic waste or household waste into small pieces. The smaller the shape, the faster composting takes place.
  • Add manure or soil or finished compost or sawdust as an inoculant.
  • Dissolve water with an activator. Pour the activator into the compost and mix well.
  • Add the activator liquid again if the mixture is still too dry.
  • Pour into a composting container and close tightly.
  • Stir once a week so that the air flow in the container is good.
  • The temperature in the container will rise which indicates if the microorganisms are working during the composting process.
  • If it has entered the 7-8th week of composting, the temperature in the container will return to normal.

The compost is ready to use and can be sifted. Please note, good compost is blackish brown and fine grained.

2. How to Make Simple and Quick Compost from Aking Rice and Dried Leaves

Here are some ingredients, tools and how to make simple and quick compost from aking rice and dried leaves that can be followed:

Ingredients for composting:

  • Aking rice as a decomposer
  • 1 sack of dry leaves
  • 1 medium size bucket of water
  • enough plastic rope

How to make compost:

  • Pour the dried leaves onto the ground or dry area. Then mix it with 1 bucket of water and the prepared aking rice.
  • Stir the aking rice and water until completely dissolved. If it is mixed and dissolved then pour it into the dry leaves slowly.
  • Stir until all the dry leaves are exposed to the solution evenly. But do not just mix, make sure first the level of wetness is only limited to moist or not too wet.
  • Put back the dry leaves that have been mixed with the aking rice solution and water into the sack containing half of the dry leaves.
  • Tie the sack of dry leaves with the prepared plastic rope. If so, store the compost bag in a dark place.
  • Let stand for a week, and if it's been a week, untie and moisten again without the need for aking rice.
  • Repeat the method the following week and make sure that the fertilizer is moist. If it's not moist enough, you can add water.

If it is in the third week, the fertilizer will turn black and the texture will be like powder. The fourth week is the completion of the compost from dry leaves, meaning that the fertilizer can be used.

3. How to Make Simple and Fast Compost from Animal Manure

Here are some materials, tools and ways to make simple and quick compost from animal waste that can be followed:

Ingredients for composting:

  • Animal dung used can be goat or cow dung.
  • Husk charcoal.
  • Enough water.
  • Straw that has been formed is about 10 cm.
  • Sawdust or leaves to taste.
  • EM4 fertilizer liquid.

How to make compost:

  • Prepare a decomposer solution made from a mixture of sugar, EM4 and enough water.
  • Mix the husk charcoal with animal manure and stir until smooth.
  • Add the decomposer liquid to the processed animal waste.
  • Add other ingredients such as leaves, bran, straw and sawdust.
  • Add back enough decomposer solution.
  • When finished, cover the compost material tightly with a burlap sack or straw for 24 hours.
  • On the next day, level the compost again and let it rest for the next 24 hours.
  • The third day, check the processed animal manure compost. If it still feels hot in your hands then you can let it sit again for the next 24 hours.
  • The next day, recheck the animal manure compost to make sure whether the compost can be used or not.

If the compost from animal manure doesn't feel hot in your hands, then the compost is ready to use.

Those were the three methods or ways to make simple and fast compost that you can follow. The ingredients are easy to find and the process is easy, so you can apply them to reduce organic waste at home. Please put it into practice right away!
